Nowadays, love among college students has become increasingly common. As is described in the picture, student lovers are often found on campus, sitting on green grass or on long benches. What has made campus romance so popular?

There may be several possible reasons for the increasing popularity of campus love. First of all, with the development of society, young boys and girls become more independent than before. They believe that they are mature enough to pursue their own love. Secondly, stress from study and competition among peers make quite a number of students try to seek relief from love. Parents, especially those of teenagers, care about their children’s education more than anything else. They could do everything for their children. Many of them spend most of their spare time coaching their children in studies; those who have time or cannot do it have hired tutors. Some also send children to after-class schools. Some even have tried to mould their home environment more favorable for study. It seems as if a better education is all that parents expect for children.

The present situation can be explained by the following reasons. First of all, as our country’s economy moves ahead healthily, many parents have become aware that future success depends more and more on skills and education. Lack of training and education will no longer ensure young people to have a promising future. Secondly, it is evident that in a competitive society there are both losers and winners. The better skills and knowledge children possess, the more opportunities they will be ensures. What is more, with school tuitions increasing it is also reasonable for parents to expect their children to be somebody or do something great as a result of education they have received.

Certainly, it is good to see much of parents’ attention on children’s education. However, in my opinion, emphasis should also be laid on fostering other abilities and personal qualities. True, it is important to learn to succeed, but the first thing to learn is how to survive and how to be a qualified citizen. If this is included in good education that parents are seeking now, their children will be definitely ensured not only of a bright future but also a sound intellectual and mental foundation, hence a healthy life.

Now some of the students in colleges and universities in our country pay more attention to job-hunting than to their academic work. As is shown in the picture, they seem to treat the employment guide as their major subject. Generally speaking, most of the junior students work very hard, attending classes, doing their homework and consulting their teachers. However, some of the senior students, instead of pursuing their academic studies, focus their attention on looking for jobs.

As far as the purpose of the drawer of the picture is concerned, I think he intends to warn us that the fact that college graduates try to pander to the labor market will lead to the decline in higher education quality. So the drawer calls on us to respond to the situation forcefully. One point is clear that college education needs to be improved. As a result, it is the main business for students to acquire knowledge and develop abilities, which will be useful in their future careers.

In my opinion, a few preventive measures should be adopted to deal with the problem. In the first place, students should realize the importance of their routine academic studies, without which there can be no knowledge necessary and no abilities needed. As the table shows, the vast majority of the graduate students in China use English to receive information rather than to express their own ideas. In most cases, English is useful only in that it keeps them well informed of their specialized fields of study. Among those surveyed, 90% claim that they use English to read textbooks and journals, and 10% say that they use it to attend lectures. Those who claim that they use English to write reports, letters, papers account for but 5% of the total and only 6% says that they use English to talk to native speakers.

Two reasons might account for this strange phenomenon. Firstly, a survey of Chinese instructional methodology and testing system reveals that too much emphasis is put on the training of reading comprehension skills. Most of the learning materials are reading materials and examinations are basically reading types. Little use of English for normal communication is required. By the time when they enter the graduate school, therefore, some of the students can read very well but find it difficult either to speak or to write in English. Secondly, as most graduate schools neither provide English seminars nor encourage their students to write the academic papers in English, students have little chance to use their writing or speaking skills.

Graduate students are the future of China’s academic pursuits and English is the bridge that links them with the international academic world. To contribute to the development of the world, graduate students in China must learn to speak and write in English. This is probably the only way by which their voice can be heard by the whole world.

As is apparently revealed in the bar chart above, steadiness, high salary and self-development are viewed as the ideal career standards by most university students. What is reflected in the chart is most thought-provoking and worth discussing among the general public for the time being.

The implied meaning which is conveyed in the bar chart can be briefly stated in the following two aspects. To begin with, the spirit of challenge is missing among most university students. As is indicated in the chart above, the majority of students regard steadiness as their top ideal career standard. The very fact shows that now most university students lack the confidence and courage to face hardships and difficulties in terms of work. What’s more, most students are money-oriented and self-centered. As is indicated in the chart, high income and self-development are viewed as the most important factors in terms of their ideal career standards. The fact indicates that most people lack the spirit of serving the people and rewarding the society. In short, the employment ideal of university students needs to be adjusted.

In my view, some necessary measures should be taken to establish new ideal career standards among university students. On the one hand, a widespread education campaign must be launched to popularize correct employment concepts. On the other hand, a healthy social environment should be created so as to guide the development of students’ mind. Only in these ways can university students find their ideal jobs in our harmonious society.
